JUNE 2009 Book Review

Wild at Heart – Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul
By John Eldredge

Men and brothers: your wife or girlfriend may take a strong dislike to this book, because it tells men to stop being “Mr Nice Guy” and instead become what men are supposed to be: dangerous, passionate, alive and free.

Next warning: this is not a theology book or a bible study. So don’t expect it to teach you all that the Bible says about being a man. Some feel this is the weaker part of the book, and have criticized Eldredge for being less than accurate in his handling of Scripture.

So why should you still read it? Because it is so well-written, with so much passion and conviction. Because it is profoundly thought-provoking yet easy to read. More than once, in reading the first few chapters I came to a point where I exclaimed: Aha! Yes, the recognition of my own past experience as a boy and adolescent resonated strongly with what John Eldredge says. His insight in the male psyche is spot-on and much more readable than the somewhat older (secular) runaway 1990 bestseller “Iron John” by Robert Bly.

MAY 2009 Book Review

The Single Issue
By Al Hsu, IVP

Single people don’t always feel welcome in the Church. Historically, singlehood has been lifted up as “more spiritual”, and the celibacy requirement for clergy in the Roman Catholic Church is a testimony to that tradition, based on Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 7. Contemporary realities require churches to be ‘family-friendly’. Nothing wrong with that. But to singles, it often feels like they are left out in the cold. Add to that the relatively recent development of growing numbers  who are ‘single again’ after divorce.

Six Prayers God Always Answers - Results may vary
By Mark Herringshaw & Jennifer Schuchmann
(Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., 2008)

A catchy title, for sure. But does it live up to its promise? If you expect a “how to” book on prayer, look elsewhere. Do not read this unless you are prepared to think hard about how we truly relate to God. If that ‘kills’ it for you, because you are looking for some quick-answers-show-me-how-in-six-steps type of book, so be it. But it’s not fair to dismiss it so lightly. Isn’t it just as true that many have been turned off by “how-to” approaches because they seldom deliver what they promise? Having cleared away a possible misunderstanding, I affirm: Yes, it is about prayer, but in reality about much more than that. The authors approach prayer from a very different angle than most Christian books. As one reviewer on amazon.com put it: “This ain’t your grandma’s Christian book”.

MARCH 2009 Book Review

THE GRAND WEAVER – How God  Shapes Us Through the Events of Our Lives
By Ravi Zacharias

Ravi Zacharias is one the foremost contemporary Asian apologists of the Christian faith. Some years ago I met this prolific writer in Singapore, a formidable intellect and eloquent speaker,  but I was apprehensive about reading this book. One of his previous titles, Deliver us from Evil, was a big disappointment to me, so would this one be better? It turned out that this is a very different Ravi Zacharias from his earlier books: much warmer, much more approachable, yet every bit the sharp thinker.  The Grand Weaver, in Ravi’s own words, “is about seeing the designing hand of God and his intervention in our lives in such a way that we know he has a specific purpose for each of us and that he will carry us through until we meet  him face-to-face and know ourselves completely.” (p.11)
