APRIL 2010 Book Review

Facing the Giants
Book by Eric Wilson
DVD by Alex Kendrick

Since we live in an age where the visual often attracts more attention than the printed story, we feature a recent Christian bestseller: “Facing the Giants”. The movie (available on DVD) was shown recently at Wesley. The story is simple: Grant Taylor, the coach of an American college football team is in trouble. His team seems incapable of winning, and after three years, a growing chorus of critics want him out. On top of that he faces a number of minor and major domestic challenges too. Grant’s wife is unable to conceive and they really want a child, but after seeing a specialist, the problem appears to lie with him – not a great self-confidence booster. If the story was set in Singapore, the phrase “cannot make it” would come to mind! But with God, nothing is impossible. Grant believes in God, prays for a breakthrough, and things begin to turn around. He finds a new (and rather forceful) way to motivate the team, and they begin to surprise everyone by winning. Nobody expects this underdog team to make it to the Georgia state finals, but amazingly, they do, and even beat their opponents called “The Giants” who expected an easy win. On the domestic field things begin to turn around too, but I don’t want to give everything away in this review.

MARCH 2010 Book Review

The Soy Sauce Towkay - The Story of Yeo Thian In, Founder of Yeo Hiap Seng Sauce Factory in Singapore
By F T Liu & Lee Tee Jong

What does soy sauce have to do with godliness? The juxtaposition may seem odd. But at a time when many Christians are looking for ways to let the light of the gospel shine in the marketplace, this unpretentious biography has a compelling drawing power.

It is not a 'rags-to-riches' story. Yeo Thian In who migrated from Zhuangzhou to Singapore in 1938 already had a successful soy sauce business. But the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war in 1937 gave Yeo Thian In the push he needed to venture out and to try to build up a soy sauce business in Singapore. He succeeded in spite of many setbacks. Initially sales were very sluggish. The business in China was under threat as the Japanese were advancing and were about to take over Zhangzhou in Fujian Province, and in Singapore his cash flow dried up. Thian made a dangerous journey back to China to obtain additional funds for the Singapore operation; he also persuaded two uncles in Labuan and Malaysia to come to Singapore to work in the YHS factory. Some of them did and made it safely back to Singapore in December 1941, but by then the Japanese imperial army has started its relentless drive towards Singapore.

The Hole in Our Gospel - What does God expect of us?

JANUARY 2010 Book Review

The Hole in Our Gospel - What does God expect of us?
By Richard Stearns
[Nelson 2009]

Richard Stearns is the president of World Vision U.S., one of the largest Christian Relief Agencies in the world. In that capacity, he is a very busy man, who had to be prodded into writing this book by his associates, convinced as they were that he had something very important to share. The result is a team effort, but it is a message in which the strong personal convictions and the unique experience of Stearns ring loud and clear. It is a wake-up call to the evangelical church worldwide. The message is actually very simple. "Being a Christian, or follower of Christ, requires much more than just having a personal and transforming relationship with God. It also entails a public and transforming relationship with the world. If your personal faith in Christ has no positive outward expression, then your faith --and mine-- has a hole in it." (p. 2) Stearns discovered the 'hole' while he was a successful CEO leading a company producing luxury goods and enjoying the 'good life.' In this review I can't give away the plot, but the story of how he became the leader of a large charity is absolutely fascinating.

Grace: The marvelous gift of God

DECEMBER 2009 Book Review

Grace: The marvelous gift of God
By Selwyn Hughes
(Farnham: CWR, 2005)

A green ribbon runs across a white background. The cover of this pocket-sized book suggests a great gift for a friend. Perhaps it does. For through its 105 pages, Selwyn Hughes explores one of the best known but perhaps most misunderstood “gifts” that God has given: His gift of grace for humanity. The introductory chapter asks a question that highlights Hughes’ motive for writing the book: “Have you slackened off spiritually?” Hughes suggests that a proper response to this question is to understand the gift of God’s grace, to be willing to receive it and move forward from your current spiritual state.
