The Kaka Story – Toward the Goal
by Jeremy V. Jones

Starting off on a high note, Toward the Goal: The Kaka Story begins with visually detailed soccer action of pressing goal attacks and defence line ups and the stuff of heart-stopping free kicks and stunning goalie’s dives that lead to the moment of glory for one of the most recognised mid-fielders of all time.  These are sure to stir any young soccer fan’s imagination of the very day that Kaka, the star of the story, was named the 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year and received the prestigious golden ball trophy, the Ballon d’Or.

Comprising short and easily digestible chapters, The Kaka Story tells of a young Brazilian boy’s rise to fame, but what truly sets him apart as a true champion are his priorities in life – faith, family and then football.  From a little boy going to his first soccer match to becoming what many would call a legend, the story also slows down to include Kaka’s struggles and setbacks.  Kaka’s perspective towards these hurdles provides our young readers with inspiration and encouragement as he shares personally on learning to trust in a God who is faithful.

This book will appeal to tweens, for the chapter ‘God and Soccer’ talks about Kaka’s very real and personal encounter with God at the age of 12.  It also speaks of Kaka’s friendship with a boy from Southern Brazil and how Kaka helped his friend begin a relationship with Jesus.  Of course, other than bible study, Kaka and his best friend, like other boys their age,  also loved their PlayStation games!

Throughout, the book is peppered with little gems like how despite Kaka’s already outstanding ball-handling abilities, he always listened to his coaches. In his quick rise to fame, it was also clear to the public eye that Kaka remained humble and gracious about the attention and saw it all as a blessing from God. Even amidst public pressure and criticisms, Kaka handled it all “with his usual grace.” Always honest and outspoken about his devotion to Christ, the book goes on to describe Kaka’s choices in life as a young adult, including those pertaining to marriage and the much publicised decision to leave AC Milan for Real Madrid.

As the book concludes, it is clear that the lesson Kaka brings home to readers through his life story is that no matter the large number of accolades, faith and character is more important than fame and multi-million dollar contracts.  The one declaration Kaka’s life makes can be summarised in the bold print on the T-shirt he wore beneath his soccer jersey one victorious day at a Champions League Final, that indeed “I belong to Jesus!”
